So I just read !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , and it got me thinking. GM isn't that bad guy here, at least not the whole company. The bad guy is the higher ups, the CEO's, the people in charge, the ones calling the shots. What has happened in the past can't be changed. It's extremely sad, and GM screw up big time, but to yell at them and point the finger will just guilt trip them into trying to make amends. Like having a kid caught with his hand in the cookie jar. He feels guilty, so he'll be a good boy (for the moment).
What upsets me is that GM is playing hardball with the facts, trying to downplay everything to get out mostly unsacathed. They screwed up but they won't admit how bad.
And I feel really uncomfortable about !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . How is GM gonna make up this money? I don't know too much about the automotive industry, I'll admit that. But last time GM had a financial !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , Pontiac and Saturn were lost and a lot of people here in Michigan lost their job. There was a sudden influx of not enough jobs, too many people. It sort of seems GM is overly eager to save money by making either a cheaper car part or letting people go.
Feel free to critize me if you want, and I would love to be wrong about all this. I hope GM will man up, take a hit, and just keep everyone who works for them. And that the CEOs will take a paycut because who seriously needs that big of a house? But this is my wishful thinking...

Don't feel bad for them. The people responsible for this won't get much more than a stern lecture and made to promise they won't do to again.

This is a statement about the recall shitstorm I can agree with.
$35 million dollars isn't what's gonna kill them, it's the millions of dollars that are going to be lost fixing those past mistakes. And if GM tanks again, that's it, no bailout this time. I'm still hopeful of a return of Pontiac and Saturn, but I know it isn't gonna happen.
They do need to just take the hit and fix the cars, people are still going to buy their product.

I think the corporate culture at GM is to blame. This whole situation smacks of GM of the past thirty years. Many people have come and gone since then but the doctrines and politics remain the same.

Especially the MI residents. Here, GM is family. Even if they do wrong, people will buy GM because it supports jobs in their town. Or they get the $1000 dollar discount because a family member has/does work for GM.

It could very well be. Right now GM is in the limelight, so all eyes are in them, every mistake. It begs the question, "have other companies done similar things?"

GM's problem is and has always been excessive pinching of pennies. For example, they hassle parts suppliers to get their wares at the lowest possible price and, because GM is too big to turn down, the suppliers cut quality so that they eke out a small profit on those sales.
I also find most of GM's everyman cars to be styled with too much of an eye toward manufacturing savings when compared to Volkswagen, Ford, and Dodge. And, when you want to go buy a GM car, you have to suffer through their ridiculous packaging strategy just to get the one or two options you really want.
What GM needs to do is buckle down and produce cars that people will want. They might have to eat some costs for a little while, but that's what happens when you have a reputation to rebuild; you can't have your cake and eat it, too. Let the truck and commercial sales subsidize the consumer car sales for a little bit. As long as your product is good , people will come.
Oh, and most importantly:
FUCK THE SHAREHOLDERS.
